Maurice
is best known for his toast portraits of Elvis Presley,
the Mona Lisa, and the toast portrait that he did earlier
this year of Peter Jackson, which is displayed at Wellington
Airport.
While
there has been talk for sometime about branching out from
toast into a new food groups, Maurice says that he will
always be known as ‘The Toastman‘, and with
this in mind he is now turning to how he can interpret Maori
carvings and designs into his toast art.

Eminem
out of m&m’s
4th
May 2005
5040
individual candy M&M’s have been have been arranged
to create an image of the rap artist Eminem, The work
was created by Wellington artist Maurice Bennett, for
the Colour My World competition, which has been recently
run by the makers of M&M’s.
Each
candy was glued to a backing board, a very time consuming
and at times monotonous process, but one that was well
worth the trouble when you view the end result. “It
was just to good to be true” says Maurice, when
talking about why he choose Eminem as is image, “it
was waiting to be done”
“It
was fun working with a new medium. I had to work out how
five different colours would fit, and try many different
combinations. At times, I could not help myselve from
eating many of the M&M’s that were suppose to
be part of the work. Once framed the finished work will
be put on display at Island Bay New World, Wellington,
the supermarket that Maurice owns and operates.
