A billboard
sized artwork made
totally from toast was unveiled in Melbourne
2002, with the high fibre portrait honoring the city’s
most famous housewife, Dame Edna Everage. The toast art
will adorn the high rise building on Latrobe St (opposite
Melbourne Central Station Latrobe St entrance) in the
Melbourne CDB. The toast portrait measures 7.35m by 5.85m
and uses the most pieces of bread ever used in an artwork,
placing it in contention for the Guinness Book of Records.
“I'm tickled pink! Although, I'm far from crusty,
it's wonderful to be 'popping up' on a Melbourne billboard!"
says Dame Edna about the artwork.
New Zealand toast artist Maurice Bennett created
the tasty tribute. He is famous for his amazing creations
previously toasting Elvis
and Leonardo Da Vinci’s Angelo’s Mona
Lisa for displays in New Zealand.“The magnificent
image of Dame Edna took 2989 slices of Wonder White bread
or 187 loaves and more than a month of toasting to create”
said Maurice.
